This is our most popular trek and offers to visitors the most economical method to trek the 5 Days Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. You will be joining a group of other trekkers like you coming from overseas, a great opportunity to have fun and make new friends.

If you are short on time you may want to choose 1 +/-days for with the eventual goal of completing the entire Salkantay trek to Machu

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Sayllpata – Soraypampa

We will leave Cusco approximately at 5:30a.m. A bus will take us to the town of Mollepata where we will arrive approximately at 7:30 in the morning, we will stop for last minute supplies, leg-stretching or to use the restrooms at a local restaurant. We will continue our journey to Sayapata, our trek starting point. We will meet with our support staff, who will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:00 a.m., we will begin our hike toward Soraypampa. During the hike we will have panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay, other mountains covered with snow. Around 1:00p.m. we will have a Peruvian lunch. After lunch, we will visit Humantay Lake, a marvelous lake in the mountains, (3 hours hike) and we will come back to our campsite where the tents will be ready for you as well as your dinner.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay

After a good breakfast we prepare ourselves to undertake the long and hardest stretch of the trip, leaving at 7am. We cross all the denominated Salkantay Pampas site from where we`ll go towards the left side of the snow-capped mountain Umantay which is next to the snowed one Salkantay. About 12pm we will be in the highest point (step Salkantay Umanata to 4500 a.s.l.). From this place we observe the snowed ones and glaciers of the Salkantay. Besides we`ll appreciate the stunning view of the falling snow ( avalancha). After one hour of having reduced the trek rythm, we have the lunch. Later we restart the trek until the place denominated Huayrac we`ll set up our second campsite.

Day 03 : Chawllay – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes

We will eat breakfast at 6:00 am, then immediately we will begin our 5 ½  hour trek along the edge of the jungle through ascents and descents. In this route we will enjoy views of plantations of coffee, orchids, begonias, bromelias, and many other plants used for medicinal purposes. Then, we will arrive at our lunch spot in Playa Sahuayaco where we will have a buffet style lunch. After, we will have a locally guided tour of coffee preparation and finally we will enjoy a delicious dinner prepared for us by our chef.

Day 4: Santa Teresa –Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes

In Santa Teresa we will begin the day with breakfast at 6:30 am and be ready to continue our hike for 3 hours towards Hidroeléctrica where we will have lunch in a restaurant. After lunch we will continue our hike for 3 more hours towards Aguas Calientes where we will stay in a hostel and have dinner at 6.30 pm.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

We wake up early and hiking to Machupicchu where we begin a complete guided tour of the Inca citadel that will take approximately two hours. You will then have free time to walk around, climb up the Huaynapicchu Mountain, where one can experience spectacular views of all of Machupicchu, the valleys and mountains that surround it (please note that there are only 400 visitors allowed per day), or visit the Temple of the Moon or the impressive Inca Bridge. In the afternoon, we meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where, if you like, you can visit and relax in its hot springs. From here we take the train back to the city of Cusco, where we arrive after nightfall.

TRANSPORTATION

The following transportation services are included within the tour:

  • Tourist Transport Cusco: Mollepata trip, approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes
  • Mollepata- Challacancha Transport, approximately 45 minutes
  • Tourist Transport from Ollantaytambo station to Cusco (Plaza Regocijo)

Train included in all tours is the Cerrojo-Expedition (Aguas calientes to Ollantaytambo) Train times will only be confirmed once full amount of tour is paid. The earliest train you could take is the 14:00 and being the 9:00 pm the last train

CAMPING EQUIPMENT

We include all of the camping equipment necessary to ensure the confort of our customers:

  • 1 tent for every 2 people: the tents that we offer to our customers are spacious, with intial capacity for 4 people, but we only use them for 2 people
  • 5 extra kilos for the backpacks on horse (personal items)
  • Sleeping mats with a thickness of 5 centimeters
  • Sleeping bag

CAMPSITE INFRASTRUCTURE

We have camps set up in every designated CAMPING SITE, which include:

  • Soraypampa: the tents are set up under a shelter to prevent our customers from being cold
  • Chaullay and Santa Teresa: the camping sites are spacious so that travelers can enjoy the open views to the fullest during their limited stay in each place

ACCOMODATIONS

The accommodation that is included in the HOSTEL in the town of Aguas Calientes.

  • Official Tourism Guide- our guides are certified by DIRECTUR with a minimum experience of 3 years. Groups bigger than 14 people will be

  • Muleteers and horses to carry all of the camping and cooking equipment

Important Note:

  • All itineraries are subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control including, weather, road or trail conditions and flight schedules.
  • Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend the use of a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is easiest for you to carry. A good size daypack is also essential.

Do I need to book it in advance? 5 Days Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu has departures guaranteed, but train tickets and entrance to Huayna Picchu mountain are subjet to availability. For that reason, we HIGHLY recommend booking it in advance to ensure you receive exactly what you want!

PLEASE NOTE: May, June and July are peak months of a HIGH TOURIST SEASON in Cusco. It means that train tickets ARE SELL OUT QUICKLY!! Please be aware that the trek leaves daily; however, return train tickets may not be available, if you like to book on last moment. To avoid this inconvenience, please book it several weeks in advance!
