Shortened Salkantay – AKA Savage Mountain 3d/2n

This was our second stop on our Peruvian adventure and it did not disappoint! We arrived in Cusco a day before our trek – mistake. They told us ‘at least a week to get acclimated to the altitude.’ Fair statement. Saywas met with us the night before, but rescheduled our information session while we were out of wifi. Luckily, they were able to meet with our friends who met up with us for the trip and filled us in. We collected supplies (water, cocoa leaves, snacks + breakfast) and were up bright and early for our adventure. Fernando our guide met us at 3AM to bring us to the beginning of our trek. We drove for 4 hours to our stop and began hiking in. Salkantay is a beast of a mountain, not only that – the ability to breathe at that altitude is beyond me. It was quite the challenge to summit the mountain but we did it! We felt so accomplished at the top. Fernando sat us down and told us about the Incas and the offerings at the top of Salkantay. It was a beautiful view, unlike any picture you have seen. Later on they fed us a huge lunch and we hiked for a full 9 hours our first day. The next day we were told that part of the trek was ruined by rainstorms, so we could either walk the bus route (5 hours) or zip line…. ZIP LINE! It was awesome. We then went to the hot springs (well worth it!) and they continued to over feed us amazing food. The end of our second day was hiking into Aguas Calientes where we had dinner and collected more items for Machu Picchu the next day. Our final day was a stairmaster of a hike up to Machu Picchu, a history around the grounds and a final stairmaster hike up Machu Picchu Mountain. Saywas booked all of the accommodations, food and travel – a real unforgettable experience. I cannot stress the amount really good food provided. Great service!
